Klisurski monastery is situated in the western part of Stara Planina Mountain, under Todorini Koukli peak, close to the charming little town of Varshets. According to historians, the monastery was founded during the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. It was attacked and set on fire many times during the Ottoman period. The last raid of 1862 was the reason for the abandonment of the monastery. This incident happened on the day honoring the two saints that gave the monastery’s name. All monks and believers present at that time were killed. Only a few years later the monastery was rebuilt and resumed all its activities. In 1891, the Vidin bishop sanctified the church in the complex and in 1937 it was decorated by famous artists. In 2000, a spring of healing water was found in the monastery yard.
